Substack asked me to write 300 words on “what press independence means to me” for their post celebrating the World Press Freedom Day. I ended up writing 480 on what a lack of such freedom means to me.
I should say as a preface that I don’t attribute all of the public support for the war to the power of television. It’s a hugely important factor, but there are others—economic, historical, cultural, political, and so forth—that somebody will have to analyze deeper than I’m doing today.
Still, I do think the power of media, and the power of people and groups that control it are important topics worthy of our attention.
